Gang,
Here's an ethics question for you.
As you recall, I mailed an autograph request to Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox at their hotels during filming of the Marshall Movie in Huntington. I mailed to McConaughey and told him it was for my wife for her birthday.
This week I got a 100% autopen signature with a secretary inscription "Happy Birthday" in the mail in my return envelope. I did get back my photo unsigned.
Now the question. She will NEVER know that it's not a real sig. Do I give it to her anyway? She has the thigh sweats for him and it would be a great birthday present for her. Or do I do the ethical thing and just trash it?
Let me know, Mike

I should give it to her and say that you doubt it's the real deal though. Further, i would buy her something nice also instead of an autograph

Oh I'm getting her something else really nice for her main birthday present. This was just something to throw in.

I'd still give it to her to show the effort, but would tell her it's an autopen/secretarial. Before you know it she goes out showing it to all her friends and one happens to be an expert and says it's a fake. There goes your credibility on all your other signatures...

I definitely agree with MAD on this

Well any of her friends being an expert is not a possibility. How it would affect my credibility when none of her friends even know I have a website is also not an option.
Well, since everybody says let her in on it, I'll just tell her I tried. I guess I could just mail it back to the company and tell them that if I wanted to insult my wife on her birthday with an autopen with a secretarial inscription, I'd just slap her and save the stamps.

But they don't owe you anything, do they? It's always frustrating to get a fake, but that doesn't mean we have to be rude about it. That won't make things better.

Nope, you're right, they don't owe me anything. They did send to me at no cost a black and white 8x10 of McConaughey with a facsimile autograph and happy birthday inscription by a secretary. And they did mail back the photo I sent without putting it through the autopen, so I can try to get it signed in person at the film premiere.
